Chapter 1

Once I fell into the ocean, I became a toy for the waves, where one would pick me up, and toss me to the second, and the second tossing me to the third. This way, I spent all the time in the hands of the waves. By the end of this boot camp, I became tiny and round, as well as very shiny. Once, when one wave tossed me very high and the other was yet to catch me, I managed to jump out onto the shore and get out of this tossing business. And while I was lying here, you came and picked me up. Now what shall I tell you about my future? If you choose to take me home with you, then I might become a toy for your kids, but if you choose to throw me back into the ocean, I will once again become the prey of those wild waves. It will be a life of dancing up and down with them again, and I will become even smaller and smaller and end up as a speck of dust!”

Well, what did you think of the little stone’s long story? Just like the stone, each part of Nature will tell you stories about itself. But for now let’s leave those aside, and let’s talk to the language. The secrets that your language will share with you are so fascinating, that you will be astonished.

Chapter 1

So if you ask the language about her birth, she will tell you that to date, it is not certain as to how she was born. Some experts believe that languages are children of God, and others believe that they are off springs of the Sages. Some think that they were formed by mimicking the chirping of the birds or the roars and barks and moos of other animals, from where they managed to make a pattern and later became a language. Some others believe that languages were formed when a person was doing hard labor and in relieving the tiredness and made panting sounds such as “huff-puff”. On the other hand, some believe that “oh!”, or “wow!”, and other types of sounds which expressed pleasure and delight, formed the seeds of the language. It is also a view that singing is a part of human nature, and singing has given birth to talking. Some experts also believe that in the beginning, humans were dumb and used gestures, then, wise people sat down and created the sounds for these gestures. Implying, that as many there are mouths, that many are the expressions and as many there are heads, that many are the mottos (literal translation of Sindhi). In short, the problem of the birth of human language is like a riddle which has not been solved by any one, as yet.

Such is the case of only about the birth of languages; the developments of their growth and progress, face and features, and color and form, are not any less interesting than magical stories!
